New Uses For Old Things
Like many of you already know we reuse, recycle, upcycle and re-purpose things at our house. A perfect example of this habit occurred the other day when our nephew and his lovely new wife came by for a visit. We love sending them home with a bag of veggies from our garden. She ( our niece in law?, hmm is that right) thought I was very clever using a lingerie bag to hold veggies. I have my moments, giggle. I use old lingerie bags for onions and potatoes too. The bags hang on the hooks inside the pantry door. I also use lingerie bags when I go to the market. I stay away from the plastic bags they provide in the fruits and vegetables aisles. Lingerie bags are light weight so they don’t add much to the scale and they are meant for washing your dedicates so cleaning them easy peazy. They are inexpensive too. win, win, win.
When I was making my cup of tea this morning, I thought about my little tea bag caddy. Another inexpensive item that is originally meant for desk drawers or to hold silverware ( although the cheaper ones are not usually long enough to hold knives). I keep hubby’s kcups in one too. They sit side my side in the cupboard. Easy to grab one or the whole tray.
I hang onto food and spa gift baskets from the holidays too. Once all of the goodies are gone there are so many uses for them. I keep the little boxes of cereal our grandchildren like so much in this one on the top of the fridge. I just put the basket on the table so they can make their selection.
An odd shaped basket similar to the example here, holding the instant foods, arrived one year. The rounded bottom made it difficult to use for household things. But, it’s perfect for our sweet Izzy’s toys. He just gives it a little tip if he wants to dump them all out or he reaches inside for the one he wants.
My constantly changing eyeglass prescription has provided me with a lot of eyeglass cases over the years. One of my favorite uses is a “to go” first aid kit. Just the essential fit inside and you can toss it in your purse, a tote bag or in the glove box of the car.

Your lingerie bag idea is brilliant, I had a chuckle because my lingerie bags all have embroidered or printed pictures of bras and pants on the front and I would imagine that would raise an eyebrow with your nephews wife!

I love the lingerie bag idea for produce. I have never seen one of those bags. I shop at the 99 Cents Store a lot, but have not come across them.

Katie, love these tips! I’ve done some of them but here’s one for the eyeglass case. I have a large one that wasn’t being used so I now keep my iPod in it, along with my earbuds and the USB recharge cord.

My wife is always finding uses for baskets. Often she fills them with goodies and gives them as gifts.

I LOVE the lingerie bag idea! I use a lot of the little rectangular plastic baskets and have other, regular baskets I use for toys, washcloths and hand towels and mail that gets dropped on the counter. Hadn’t thought of anything as ideal as the eyeglass case/first aid kit. Great idea, Katie!
