Candy Corn
I always associate candy corn with this time of year. I know it is available all year round. But Autumn and Halloween just makes me think of candy corn. I went in search of some candy corn goodies and along the way found out some interesting facts about candy corn.
October 30th is National Candy Corn Day! I should have waited to write this post 🙂
It is made in Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter colors too.
It is over 100 years old and was created by George Renninger who worked for the Wunderlee Candy Company at the time. The candy is made by a using a method called corn starch molding.They use a tray with the corn kernel shapes, they pour in white mellow-creame and the color is added in two steps. First after it is partially set, the orange mellow-creme is added, then the yellow mellow-crème is added. After it all cools it has an outer coat of confectioners glaze added to the outside ( that’s what makes it a bit shiny). Thats’ right my sweet bloggy friends- sugar, cornstarch and more sugar. But you knew that already, right?
I thought I’d see if anyone had a recipe for a “healthy” candy corn alternative I found one at Chocolate Covered Katie’s She made some vegan healthy candy corn. It look terrific! A (very) simple treat is mix equal amounts of candy corn and peanuts. When eaten together they taste exactly like a Payday candy bar. Yum!
