Beef Rouladen
This beef rouladen recipe always reminds me of my childhood. My Father loved it and my Mother made it for him as often as she could. It really is an easy recipe and uses round steak which is fairly in expensive. I have seen recipes that also add pickles. This is terrific served with your favorite potato or egg noodles. We don’t eat red meat much at our house but this is a terrific Beef Rouladen recipe with a big taste.
It’s a holiday here in the US, Happy Columbus Day everyone!
What You Need
8- 1 1/2lb. Beef round steaks (thinly sliced or pounded)
1/4 Cup Dijon mustard
1/2 Cup onion (minced)
1/4 Cup bell peppers (chopped)
1/4 Cup celery (chopped)
1/4 Cup carrots ( thinly sliced)
1 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Black pepper
8 Pieces bacon (any style)
3 Tbsp. Olive oil
1 3/4 Cup beef broth
1/4 Cup water
1/4 Cup sour cream
1/2 Cup flour
Nonstick skillet with lid
Toothpicks, skewers or string
Bowl
Whisk
Slotted spoon
Before You Start -Pour flour into a pie plate or shallow bowl
Lets Make It! In a bowl combine onion, salt, and pepper. Lay the steaks out and using the back of a spoon or spatula spread mustard evenly over one side of each steak. Lay the bacon strips on top of the mustard. Then spread the onion mixture evenly on top of the bacon. Roll each steak piece up jelly roll style and secure with tooth picks, string or skewers. Roll in flour coating all sides.
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium high heat, place steak rolls into the skillet and cook until browned on all sides. About 5-10 minutes. Pour beef broth and water around the rouladen and bring to a boil. Lower heat to medium low and cover and simmer for about 15 minutes. Add bell peppers, carrots and celery cover and continue to cook for about 15 minutes. Using a large slotted spoon remove rouladen and place on a plate. Remove toothpicks, string, etc. in the skillet add sour cream and whisk well to combine, heat through. Serve over the top or as a side gravy .
*Katies Tid Bits, if gravy is to thin add a little flour or instant potatoes until it reaches your desired consistency.

I was just reading down it and thought, where are the pickles?! LOL! I lived in Germany for 3 years as a child. My mom makes rouladen. I have too but it’s time intensive so we don’t make it often. Ours has onions, eggs, bacon, mustard, pickle. I DO NOT like the pickle since I don’t like the pickle warm!
