5 Ways to Create Your Perfect Master Bathroom

The bathroom gets a lot of traffic, we all spend plenty of time in there every day. But, it is often the last room we think to design. I know we can’t all have a zen experience and spa like atmosphere. But, with 5 ways to create your perfect master bathroom design tips, you will be off to a great start. Do them a little at a time or all at once. I invited my sweet bloggy friend Lisa, from Black Canyon Woodworks to be my guest today. Please join me in welcoming her to Katherines Corner.

Master bathroom design significantly impacts your everyday living. It is, after all, a room you use every day. Have you ever been in a bathroom where the layout made no sense at all?

Limited storage, no counter space, and counters at awkward heights make getting ready in the morning frustrating. And poor lighting that gives you a greenish “glow” is the worst!

A Functional & Beautiful Master Bathroom Design includes:
• An easy to clean sink, tub and shower
• Clutter-free floors (banish dirty clothes from underfoot!)
• Practical layouts and traffic paths to reduce frustration and save time

In this post, you’ll learn 5 ways to create your perfect master bathroom, whether you’re making a few cosmetic changes or even a major remodel.

1. Storage Needs

Make an inventory list of everything you want to have a place for in your master bathroom. This includes toiletries, towels, toilet paper, extra soap, and cleaning supplies.

You want ample room so it’s easy to clean up each day.

Once you have your list, here are a few things to consider:

• Built in medicine cabinets are clever for hiding all of the little items we use (like makeup and toothpaste) in a handy place.

Doors with mirrors on both sides mean you can use them open or closed.

• Install a custom vanity that has space for larger items. A vanity with cabinets and drawers is a traditional way to store extra towels. An open vanity like the one shown below utilizes pretty storage baskets to meet this need.

Have a plan for your blow dryer and curling iron too.

• Define a convenient place to store your cleaning supplies. Clean up will happen more often if it’s easy to grab gloves, a sponge, and cleaner, or some of the newer cleaning wipes.

Don’t forget your plan for garbage too. Pretty containers with lids can easily have plastic liners in them, which makes taking out the trash quick and sanitary!

• Install enough hangers. Have towel bars by the sink, the shower and the tub. A couple of hooks make hanging up PJ’s or your robe a snap too.

2. Floor Plan

Create Easy Access to the Master Closet, Bedroom, and Laundry Room
It’s ideal to have the master bedroom, laundry room and master closet tied together.

• If possible, make your master closet accessible from the bathroom so you can be in one place to get ready.

This also eliminates either hopping around in the dark trying to find your clothes or disturbing anyone who may still be trying to sleep.

• If you can, provide direct access to the laundry room via a pass-through like the custom walnut one shown here. Messy floors happen less if you can have a pass-through for dirty clothes.

Laundry shoots might also be an option for a multi-story home. If easy access to the laundry room isn’t an option, have an attractive laundry basket or cart in the laundry room to keep dirty clothes off the floor.

3. Water Considerations

Nothing is worse than a beautiful bathroom without proper water flow, especially for a multi-person household. Here are a couple of suggestions for defining your water needs and investing in quality hardware:

• Be honest about your hot water usage and size your water heater accordingly. Many of today’s new units are much more energy efficient and may offset the cost of investing in a new one.

• Choose fixtures that last. Two faucets might look the same on the outside, but the insides are often worlds apart in quality. What is the benefit of a quality faucet?

Saving the expense of purchasing twice and skipping extra visits from the plumber?

 

 

[Invest in quality hardware that lasts. You’ll thank yourself later every time you have to use them, clean them, and not replace them!]

4. Sufficient Lighting vs. Privacy

Finding the right balance between good lighting and privacy can be tricky. Here are a few suggestions:
• Install top-down blinds to provide privacy where it counts, while still letting in light. If you position your bathtub by a large picture window with top-down blinds,

you’ll have perfect privacy with relaxing natural light while you soak!

• Set up a walk-in shower using rock instead of glass. This set up gives tremendous privacy to someone showering. With the right ceiling lighting and a wall that does not go all the way to the ceiling, you can still have light without the glass.

• Provide a door between the toilet and the rest of the bathroom. A door keeps the bathroom available for more than one person at a time.

5. Proportions and Measurements

Having the right sized furniture can make or break a bathroom. Here are a few guidelines:
• Choose a double sink if you commonly share the bathroom with another person and have the space. This is better for day-to-day functionality and re-sale.

• Place counter height at around 32” and add mirrors that accommodate everyone using the bathroom. You might also need a little step stool like the one shown here

if children sometimes need to independently reach the sink or you want to reach up onto high closet shelves. Consider adding a barn wood stool by the tub too.

It’is perfect as a quick seat, a beautiful place to set fresh flowers, or a convenient place to set that glass and book while in the bath!

[Invest in a well-built step stool or barn wood stool. You’ll thank yourself later every time you need to reach anything up high in the closet or need a place!]

• Position lighting where it is most effective. For example, lighting on either side of the sink just above head level offers best illumination for shaving or putting on makeup.
