Dear Katie, I’m planning a picnic and we have a lot of ants here already. Do you know any non-pesticide ways to keep the ants from ruining our picnic? Thanks Jukes
Dear Jukes, I love a nice picnic under a shady tree. Our weather here isn’t cooperating yet. I came up with these two choices.
If you’re using a picnic table put each table leg into a container of water. Use an old margarine tub, or an aluminum foil pie pan to hold the water. Reuse, recycle .
If you’re sitting on a blanket in the grass, sprinkle talcum powder all around your picnic area. My research tells me that ants don’t like to cross it.
“May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He let His grace shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-6:26 NIV

Hi Katherine,
I have also used powdered cinnamon as a great deterrent. Not only does it remain environmentally safe, but it adds a great fragrance to the picnic as well. I have also heard that pepper works too. Enjoy those picnics!

Oh I love the cinnamon idea, thank you!

I absolutely hate ants, so I was very pleased to hear these two tips. I had never heard of either one before. I shall certainly make sure I take some talcum powder with me in future when I am planning a picnic!
kath1960 says
just pop it into your picnic basket my sweet friend xo

I can’t use pesticide and we are having horrific problems with ants! BIG ants. Lack of rain is causing them to come in the house, at the bathroom window, in my bathtub. They are driving me nuts!
kath1960 says
Eww, so sorry to hear that, perhaps you’ll give the talcum powder a try L0-)
Mitzi says
Awesome tip for certain! I would have never thought of either of those options! Thanks!

Great tips! I would hate to have a bunch of ants ruin my picnic! Do you have any tips for keeping mosquitoes away?
kath1960 says
The essential oils that work well against mosquitoes are: cinnamon oil
lemon eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, castor oil . My Avon website has some great sprays to. Hugs!

Some very good advice Katie girl. Hope you are doing well this fine thursday. We are having a big family gathering for Linda’s side saturday and will have two big cookers going. One with a 100 lb. pig and the other with a dozen chickens and everyone is bringing side to go along with the meat. It’s at her brothers place at the lake and it is beautiful and will even have his pontoon boat available for rides. Should be fun & I hear the weather should cooperate.
Later beautiful,
Odie
kath1960 says
Wow Odie, that’s quite the barbecue you have planned. Enjoy my friend. Hugs

Those were great tips, particularly the talcum powerder. My husband I usually picnic out in the woods without the benefit of a standard picnic area. And, the poweder is easy to pack!

An easy addition to your camping gear. Hugs and happy to help
