Parisian Vanity Makeover-
Our oldest granddaughter (15 in August) is in love with all things Parisian. I lived in France when I was a little girl and I remember a lot of my time there. I can understand completely why she is so ooh la la over the Parisian style. I hope one day she will get a chance to visit Paris and some of the surrounding cities. In the meantime we ( hubby and I ) have been contributing little Paris themed items for her bedroom . The latest of which is a Parisian vanity seat makeover.
Our oldest grandchildren recently went to church camp and while they were gone my daughter painted our oldest granddaughters bedroom and rearranged it a bit. I grabbed the seat from her vanity ( the vanity is a gift we gave her a few years ago) and declared a new seat was a must.
Most of you are well acquainted with the process of recovering a seat/chair/bench cushion. But I thought it would be fun to share this with you anyway. Our daughter took a photo of the vanity before the room makeover was started.
As you can see it has seen a lot of use.
A quick trip to Joann Fabric store and I was ready to set the Parisian them into high gear.
Supplies for this type of reupholstering are pretty straight forward, heavy fabric, staples, staple gun, screwdriver, scissors,measuring tape and pliers( missing from photo scissors, pliers, measuring tape). Izzy is supervising.
I turned the seat over to remove the screws that held the seat on. There were several!
When I had all of the screws removed I expected the seat to pop off. Wrong……There is one thing you can often count on when you are about to recover something, ” you may have some surprises”. The fabric and the wood were all glued on. Some prying with the screw driver and plenty of patience and soon I was able to get to the bottom of things ( giggle). There was a little clean up needed before I could proceed. I used scissors and sandpaper to clean off the glue. You may want to add them to the supply list ( you never know what you will find).
After you have removed the seat you will need to remove the under fabric and the staples. Izzy saw all of these staples and abandoned his supervisor duties for the call of the outdoors.
As you can see I had a bit of a dilemma on my hands. Normally I would remove all of the staples and add a bit more batting ( stuffing/padding) to the seat.
But the staples wouldn’t budge. I used a screwdriver, pliers and all my strength, and they remained steadfast, all of them! So time for a short cut…… (if possible I recommend removing the old fabric and adding a bit more stuffing before recovering)
I measured my fabric and moved forward. When you lay your seat out onto your fabric be sure to leave plenty of room for the new padding you have added, for tucking and folding for nice neat corners. About three to four inches all around works well.
I always start with the corners first when I begin stapling the new fabric on. Drawing one corner piece in all of the way around. And stapling “one” staple for each corner.
Then bring up the sides and smooth the fabric before stapling. Put a couple of staples in to secure it as you move around the seat. Make sure your corners are nice and neat.
The next thing I do is replace the under fabric ( this is optional). Using the same process of measuring the fabric to cover the bottom and stapling it in place. Then it’s time to screw the seat back on
The big Taa Daa moment!
Our granddaughter was thrilled with her Parisian vanity makeover and all of the improvements my daughter did. Brought her to happy tears.

Katherine, that turned out so cute, I love the Parisian theme fabric!!! And I have not covered anything, but I had my son create a small pressing board for small crafts about 24×18, but not furniture. Enjoy your day!!
