Holiday Poinsettia Craft

Hello friends, I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving. I look forward to reading your posts and seeing all you have to share at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop next week. I am sure some of you brave souls went out and did some shopping today, it is officially the start of the  “Countdown to Christmas”. How did you do? Did you find some great deals? I prefer to avoid the Black Friday crowds. But, I respect all of you who do venture out for the bargains.

Today I am happy to share my first bit of holiday craftiness, my Holiday Poinsettia Craft.

You only need basic beginner sewing skills (smile).

What You Need
1 2x 12 Framed canvas
15 x 15 Piece of Holiday Fabric
Staples
Staple Gun
Template (download below)
12 Pieces white felt 9 x 12-inch size (one more if you cover the back)
Needle and thread to match your felt
Scissors
Brooch, pendant, button, or another adornment for the center

poinsettia petals template

Let’s Get Crafty!

Cut out the templates. Then pin in place on the felt and cut out 8 large petals, 7 of the small petals, and 6 circles.

Using a needle and thread (I used blue thread so you could see it ) pinch the long end of each petal together about one inch down and stitch a running stitch through each one and tie a knot. Repeat for all of the petals.

Place the framed canvas, canvas side down, on the wrong side of the fabric, leaving about 2-3  inches all around. If your fabric has a pattern make sure it is straight.

Pull the fabric gently so it fits nice and smooth over the canvas. Staple the top and bottom of the fabric to the inside wood of the canvas.

Fold the other sides to make a nice gift style corner and staple. You really only need a few staples.

When I was creating this project I cut out a bunch of templates to lay it out. You will use your felt petals for your layout 🙂

poinsettia craft

Layout your petals on the center of the covered canvas. Lay the large petals so they touch or overlap in the center.

When you have your petals laid out the way you like them. Add a couple of simple tac stitches to each petal, by sewing through the felt and into the back of the canvas and secure with a knot.

Work around your layout so that all of the large petals and secure. Repeat this process with the small petals laying them on top of the large petals, and stitching through.

poinsettia craft 14

Pinch each circle of felt in the center and stitch it onto the center of the poinsettia petals at the pinched point. Repeat to cover all of the center edges of the petals.

Leave enough room in the center for your center adornment.

poinsettia craft 11

Fluff and fiddle with the pieces of the center circle a bit then stitch your adornment in the middle.

poinsettia craft 10

I cut the bail off of a pendant for the center. But you can use a button, a brooch, or anything that makes it fancy. (smile)

Now the back looks like this.

Staple a piece of felt on the back to cover.

You can display this bit of holiday decor on your mantle like I did,  on a wall or on an easel, anywhere you want a bit of Christmas decor.

I always have a hard time decorating for xmas, especially things for my walls. I am going to do this in cream to match everything else in my house.

Gorgeous Katie and I totally braved it this morning (but was around 8:30 am when I went out) and did get some great deals. Do it every year with my mom and we have so much fun and truly worth going out alone to brave the crowds (which again weren’t that bad). Happy Friday and have a great weekend!! 🙂 xoxo!!
