Tell Me A Story and Travel Game Printable
When I was young my Mother would play the, “tell me a story game” with us ( my brother and I). If we were stuck inside on a rainy day, or on the road, or sequestered in our bedroom so my Father could have no kids quiet time after work. The “tell me a story” game was always one of my favorite things. I’ve played the game with our daughter and grandchildren over the years. I also tried to play it with hubby on a road trip once or twice, it was a “no go”, ( wink). However, we have had some of our most fun conversations while traveling. Not to mention we can both belt out a song on the radio or cd like nobody’s business…
You may already have the tell me a story game on your radar. But just in case it is new to you I thought I’d share this game and a few other travel games too. If you are traveling with young children or grandchildren it’s true you will hear, ” are we there yet and I’m bored”. I know a lot of children have tablets, phones etc. to play with while traveling. But some of the best travel games don’t require any batteries or charging.

Tell Me a Story
For ages 5 and up
One person starts by saying once upon a time and then, for example, “there was a princess in a castle”, then the next person says- “Once upon a time there was a princess in a castle and adds their sentence. For example, “that had been captured by an ogre with curly blue hair”. Then the next person says, “once upon a time there was a princess in a castle that had been captured by an ogre with curly blue hair “and they add their sentence, and on and on until you decide to say the end. It’s a wonderful and creative way to exercise your imagination and your memory.
Mode of travel, ANY
I Spy
For all ages
One person sees something and keeps it to themselves and says, “I spy with my little eye something that is_______ (say the clue)”. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess what was seen.

20 Questions.
For all ages
Someone thinks of a person, place or thing (announce which it is for younger children) everyone else takes turns guessing by asking a question that can be answered with a yes or no. If there is no winner by the 20th question, start over with a new clue.

License Plate Game
For ages 8 and up
Using the printable- When the license plate for a state is seen, the first one to call it out gets his/her name marked next to the state. The winner is the one with the most states marked on the printable.

For ages 8 and up
Agree on a specific make or model of a car then call out when you see it. First to call it out is marked by someone designated to keep track of each find. Like slug bug without the slug. The winner is the one with the most called out

These are such wonderful ideas. Much better than devices! And Mad Libs are so fun. I used these a lot when my kids were little to “sneak” in learning while they were playing!

My kids used to do something similar when they were younger, usually at the breakfast table. They would make up stories and go back and forth between the two of them adding on to the story. One morning they were fighting over who would get one of the imaginary donuts in their story and I suggested they imagine there are two donuts and they both looked at me and at the same time, yelled “Noooooo.”
