Part of Your Story
I’ve had plenty of trips to the doctor’s office, etc. but this one particular trip has stuck with me longer than most. Not the diagnosis or prescription, etc. But, a simple sentence in response to my comment. It went something like this….The doctor walks in, smiling and extending his hand. I don’t extend my hand. But I ask, ” may I give you a hug instead?” he replies, “of course.” I hug him and thank him with tear-filled eyes for being such a blessing and for championing my health care by facilitating an appointment with a specialist who had a waiting list a year long.
As I gushed over him a bit and thanked him for getting me an appointment at the University of Utah with such an incredible doctor. He softly said,”I am just happy to be part of your story.” I had a lump in my throat when I heard those words, and looked over at my husband who was obviously feeling the same way as I was. My hubby gave my hand a little squeeze of affirmation.
My wonderful hubby and I discussed the doctor’s humble response on the drive home. This is the doctor, who after seven years of misdiagnoses, horrible tests and more, put an end to all of it by connecting me with the specialist at the University of Utah. He had such an incredible impact on our life. I was diagnosed and I am being treated for migraine seizures.
Most of you know I have blood cancer too. But, that is another story and another doctor 🙂
Today I woke up with this doctor’s words in my head. ” I’m just happy to be part of your story” . A simple sentence that pacts a heartfelt impact.
Without you, Katherines Corner wouldn’t be the happy place that it is. So, I’m sending you all a hug today. No matter where you are or what you are doing. Except driving or operating machinery, which you shouldn’t be doing while reading my blog anyway (wink). Please take a breath in and slowly exhale, relax your shoulders and feel my hug. God bless you all and thank you for being part of my story.

What a blessing he was in your story! Glad you are getting the treatment you need. And now you have words to live by with his statement.
When we reach out to people, we become a part of their story and hopefully a blessing.
First I am so thankful that you are getting some good advice and diagnosis. What a lot you’ve been through over the years. And that phrase will go in my journal tonight. I volunteer for a Hospice house. Once a week (or more) I visit patients there. Sometimes it’s not easy but it is always rewarding. And how amazing to think I could be part of someone’s story. Aw, Katie I am just so happy that your doctor sounds like an incredible man with amazing bedside manner. That said, put a smile on my face that he is helping to make your diagnosis easier and more managable hopefully for you. Hugs and just so happy that you are a virtual friend here. xoxo <3
No, I am so sorry, I didn’t know about the blood cancer. I wish you all the best with your health and pray for you. We all have crosses to bear, some more than others, that is why we must be grateful for all of our blessings.
