Saturday Installation

This past weekend was a busy one, my sweet hubby took a rare weekend off and guess what we did……go ahead…guess….that’s right! You guessed correctly didn’t you? We had to install a new microwave! ( well we made chili too, see below)

We built our lovely home in 2005 and we were hopeful all of the appliances would last at least 10 years. Unfortunately the microwave died. We had a quick funeral for it and then decided we needed a new microwave STAT! Isn’t it funny, it is an essential. I don’t really cook in it. It’s our “warm it up machine”, and official popcorn maker.

So after a quick trip to Lowes we started the project.

After removing the old microwave we realized just how poorly it was installed, big holes and nothing was mounted on any studs.

Fortunately I have my own stud and he made sure the new microwave was installed correctly.

Shabby Chic Wreath Craft

My art room is in a constant state of almost done. It is the only room in the house that isn’t a mix of modem and traditional styles. It’s shabby chic, totally girlie, pinks and pastels and flowers. It’s  a pleasant on going project. I’m adding to it a little at a time. Just a little bit  here and a little bit  there…. Eventually it will all come together. I use the room for more than just my creating it has a little bed in it too ( it was in the Wordless Wednesday post this week .) Our oldest granddaughter stays in my art room when she sleeps over. She likes pink too. Our other grandchildren all curl up together in the queen sized bed in our guest room, they’re small and they all fit for now.

It’s been a while since I posted a new craft so it’s the perfect opportunity for me to add a little something to my art room too.

What You Need

Styrofoam Wreath 12-14 inches

Cotton fabric   1/2 yard

Cotton batting 1  small bag

Scissors

Glue gun

Ribbon

Embellishments, fabric flowers, silk flowers, buttons, rosettes, pearls, lace,  etc.

Straight pin

Note: click on any image to get an enlarged photo.

Lets Make It!  Make a snip on the end of the fabric about 2-3 inches wide and then tear ( this will leave a frayed and uneven edge , shabby) . You will need approximately 8 strips at 3 inches wide to cover a 14 inch wreath.

Pull batting from bag and begin to place all over the front of the wreath, you can do the top and sides too if you prefer. But leave the back without batting so it will lay flat against the wall/door.

Once you have it covered. Take a strip of fabric, dot it with a bit of hot glue and then place it on the wreath. Add a straight pin to mark your starting point and to hold it in place while the glue dries…

Begin wrapping the fabric slowly and evenly over the batting and around the wreath. Dotting the fabric with glue occasionally to keep it in place, do not apply glue directly to the foam ( it will melt). Wrap completely until you come to the pin where you started. Add a final dot of glue.

Time for a little ribbon. Starting at the back by your pin put a drop of glue on the ribbon and lay it over the fabric and begin wrapping. Spread it out a bit you don’t want to cover all of your wonderful shabby edges.

Now it’s fluff time! Start making/gathering, ribbon flowers ( see how to here) buttons, lace, pearls, whatever you want. If you’d like to make some fabric rosettes ( sorry I haven’t posted a tutorial on rosettes ) here’s a great video to help.  After you have everything you want ready to attach. Lay it all in on your wreath first and position it where you want it before you glue it on. This is important there’s no turning back once you glue it on.

I made a couple of rosettes and added some lace and this fun heart button on mine.

Almost done. It’s time to make a bow. use the the some ribbon you wrapped with or use some other ribbon or lace to create your bow, it’s all up to you. I made a loose folding bow ( shabby) .Tie a hanging ribbon around the top of your wreath. Before you glue your bow on.

Shabby chic! That’s one more piece for the art room. I hung it on this lovely hook and it can be seen as you walk into the room. You know what’s coming next….Taa Daa!

If you decide to make your own wreath please let me know I’d love to see photos of your finished projects.

A Simple Change, Inexpensive Room Makeover

I started thinking the other day about the cost of room makeovers. I love to do room change ups, as I refer to them. I posted about my kitchen not to long ago click here for part one, click here for part 2, click here for the final part 3.

There is one room in your home that can be changed rather inexpensively. Your bathroom!

I keep beautiful neutral colored mats and towels in our master bath and then occasionally “change up” the accessories. Don’t scrimp on your mats and towels, you’ll be glad you didn’t.  The mats were about $30 each from Bed Bath and Beyond ( I have four, there’s one in the toilet room and one in front of the shower too). Also the towels are from JC Penny and cost about $12 for bath size, $9 for hand towels and $7 for face cloths. I don’t have any before photos. But these photos will give you an idea about how easy it is to make a difference in the space in your home that always gets a lot of visits.

I had this basket in the linen closet holding some face cloths. I bought it from Bed Bath and Beyond a couple of years ago on clearance for about $8

Adding a candle in the bathroom is always nice. I love to soak in a tub with soft music, some bubbles, and the added glow of a candle is so relaxing. Not all of my soaks are relaxing though  click here to read .  I had the candlestick already. I can’t remember where I bought it. I’ve had it for several years. The candle is from Kohls on sale for $5 and the dancer statue was a gift, from a dear friend and I’ve had it for years too.

The added raffia touch gives this simple candle a little extra umph! If you do this just remember to remove it before you light the candle.

I think wood is a great accent in the bathroom. The wood bowls are new from Walmart and only $6 each. I put one on each side of the two sinks. The wood tray also came from Walmart last year it was in the clearance section of the hardware department. I think I paid about $8 .

A little artwork in the bathroom is a plus too. I’ve had this framed  Van Gogh poster print of fritillaris in a copper vase for years. It hangs in the toilet room

At the beginning of this post I mentioned the accent towels. You’ve seen them in some of these photos. They were the most expensive purchase for this change up. I love towels with embroidery or pretty details and so you do have to pay more for that. These hand towels were $9 each at Bed Bath and Beyond, I bought 3. Lord how I love that shop…come to think of it, they do have a lot of our money, giggle.

So that’s it my sweet bloggy friends. Sum total of new purchases for this change up $44.

Sending prayers for all of those in Irene’s path

Just a reminder that the Beachy Kean Giveaway comes to an end at 6pm MST on the Monday the 29th. There are still less than 100 entries so get your entries in!
