Homemade Ginger Ale
Homemade Ginger Ale-
One of the things I had to give up after my diagnosis was the occasional glass of Shasta lemon lime soda, Since citrus fruits are some of my migraine triggers I had pretty much given up on a nice cold fizzy sugar free drink. I drink mostly tea and water anyway. But, it was that little treat that I missed. I am happy to say I have a solution. Home made ginger ale!
What You Need To Make The Ginger Syrup
1 1/2 Cup sugar, Splenda or Stevia powder
1/4 Cup peeled and sliced fresh ginger root ( about 1.5 inches)
1 1/2 Cups water
Saucepan
Liquid storage container with lid ( 1.5 cup or larger)
What You Need To Make The Ginger Ale
Clean bottle with lid or storage container (use the one you used to refrigerate the syrup)
Strainer or sieve
Funnel
6-8 oz. Glass
1/2 tsp. Refrigerated ginger syrup
6 -8oz. Seltzer water
Mint sprig (optional)
Before You Start– This recipe requires refrigeration overnight.
Lets Make It! In a saucepan over medium high heat, combine sugar ( Splenda or Stevia) and water, add ginger slices stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer until all of the sugar ( Splenda or Stevia) has dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool (about 30 minutes or so). Pour all ingredients into a closed container and refrigerate overnight.
Now lets make the ginger ale.
Place the funnel into your clean glass bottle or container, pour refrigerated ginger syrup through a strainer into the funnel and fill your bottle/container.
Add ice cubes to a 6-8 oz glass, add 1/2 tsp of the ginger syrup ( you may want more or less), a leaf of mint (optional), fill the glass with seltzer water pouring over the ice, stir and add a bit of mint for garnish.
Taa Daa Ginger ale!
*Katies Tid Bits– I also made this recipe with peaches, blueberries and strawberries too. Simple syrup recipes are equal parts sugar to water , then add your flavoring- fruits, ginger, etc. You can add this to ice cube trays and freeze it or store it in your fridge for no longer that 2 weeks ( I doubt it will last that long- wink).
Love them all, I hope you will give it a try. Will you make homemade ginger ale, or a fizzy fruit drink?
I was inspired to create this recipe by Family Circle magazine, I adapted this recipe to my tastes. You can find the original recipe in the August issue of Family Circle Magazine.

I hope to see you all at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop ( you can start linking tomorrow at 8PM MST)
I made this and loved it. Thank you for this and all your migraine safe recipes. They have helped me so much. I would love to know how long you think the syrup is good for. I made the ginger syrup several weeks ago. I’ve been scared to try it for the last few weeks in case it is expired. Today, I am going to make one with watermelon and mint. I’m curious how long they are stable if kept in the refrigerator of course. Thank you in advance. 🙂
Hello Cherise, I am so happy to knw you are enjoying it and my other migraine safe recipes. Most of the recipes on my site are migraine safe and great for those on restricted diets too. I will add the fridge info to the post. About 2 weeks is tops. But, the next time you make it you can freeze it in ice cub trays and it will keep well for at least 6 months. Hugs!
