Adding DIY Sparkle to the Half Bath

Adding DIY sparkle to the half bath is a nice way to upgrade our busiest bathroom in the house. Follow along as we install a new centerset faucet to the bathroom sink. An easy to follow DIY bathroom faucet installation for your home. Before we get started I want to remind you that when we built our house in 2005 we intended to live in it for two years, sell it and then put the money towards a home just for us, with special attention to the things we want in a home. We basically built this home for someone else.  But, over the years we have updated several things, added fencing, built a cottage shed and more. So it’s nice to find a little upgrade for the half bath. I picked a faucet perfect for our taste and style. It’s surprising how changing a faucet can make such a difference.

We selected California Faucets T6401-PC Mendocino 4″ Centerset from eFaucets . I love the elegant swoop of the handles. Eventually, we will replace the guest bathroom sink and faucet too. eFaucets.com has a wonderful variety of styles and finishes. They sell quality faucets, fixtures and home décor, you will be pinning everything! You can read my product review HERE. We needed a centerset faucet, but you may need a widespread faucet. Make sure to get the faucet that will match the holes in your sink.

Let’s get started.

You will need, a wrench, plumbers putty, channel locks, a plastic scraper, sponge, alcohol and a bucket or basin. Remove everything from the bathroom and from under the sink to allow for plenty of room to work. diy bathroom faucet installation basin or bucket under sinkTurn off the water to the sink, place a bucket or basin below the pipe and turn on the faucet so any water that may still be in the line can drain.  Disconnect the water supply lines from the old faucet, and disconnect the “lift rod” that is attached to the sink drain plug. Make sure the bucket or basin is directly under the p-trap then unscrew the p- trap and remove. You will want to clean the p-trap because you will need it for the installation of the new faucet. Then disconnect the drain from the sink.diy sparkle to half bath Remove the faucet and drain cover and clean up any old silicone or plumbers putty with, a cloth and alcohol ( or mineral spirits), if it’s stubborn you may need to use the plastic scraper.alcohol to remove old putty Now its time to install the new faucet. Make sure you have a gasket for your faucet ( most come with one) place the gasket over the bottom of the faucet (it will have the holes cut out already).Put your faucet in place and tighten the nuts underneath the sink. Then tighten your handles using the appropriate tool ( most will include an allen wrench in the packaging) our faucet came with a specific allen wrench for our handles. Place the allen wrench into the little holes in the handle and tighten. Now its time to attach the new drain.

Roll it like you are making a snake. Rim the drain plug area with the putty then add the drain ring inside the sink and then tighten the drain nut and gasket. Using a paper towel remove any silicon or putty that may squeeze out the sides when you tighten.drain plug installation

Install the drain plug rod by unscrewing the pivot nut and place the stopper bar into the open pivot and tighten the nut. Add the drain plug rod into the faucet and down into the strap ( stopper bar). Push the horizontal rod down through the top of the faucet and into the stopper bar. Pull the rod down and secure with a few twists of a wrench.diy faucet installation

Now check your faucet for leaks and clean out anything left in the pipe by turning on the faucet  (both hot and cold at the same time) let it run for a few minutes to confirm you have no leaks and that any residue inside the pipes is washed out.lush the water through the new faucet for a few minutes Wipe everything clean and polish your new sparkle, now step back and admire your work! taa daa! faucet installation before and after

Wow I am so happy you made a post on this. I was wondering how to change a faucet. I am saving this post Katherine so when I buy my home in the near future I hope I can do this because I just know I will be getting a fixer upper! So happy to stumble upon your useful post at the TFT party! Yay! Pinning this now!

That looks so lovely. I know what you mean about building your home for someone else! In our previous house, I was basically updating things so that we could sell the house, so I was doing the same thing–fixing the house up for someone else. We did that for years! I kept thinking that, had I known we were going to live there so long, I would have done more things the way I wanted to, sooner! I love your bathroom.
