DIY Autumn Tray Vignette
Autumn is creeping in like a snail but, the high expected today is 79 (degrees fahrenheit) so I’m running with it! Come on autumn show me some cooler temps! My favorite season means it’s time to make a few seasonal changes at Katherines Corner and here at home. Today I’m sharing a DIY Autumn Tray Vignette. When you create a vignette using a tray it allows you a wonderful opportunity to move it around until you find just the right place for it. I think this one will eventually land on our buffet… hmmm not committed to that though ( wink). If you are a regular reader at my corner of blog land you already know I enjoy creating vignettes. Although I am working on my tablescaping skills, I think I’m a work in progress when it comes to creating a vignette too. The definition of Vignette is a short scene that focuses on one moment that is especially powerful or significant in literature or portrait. Although my use of the word vignette is loosely based on the actual definition I like to “create a scene”, “tell a story” with vignettes.
Gather together your autumn bits and bobs. I sorted through my props and things here at home so I didn’t have to spend much to create this pretty autumn vignette. Keep textures, and colors in mind when you are making your selection. I used feathers, pinecones, floral picks and more. I carried all of my autumn goodies in the tray it will be created on! It all starts with the tray, aha you know that don’t you, it’s in the title, suttle right? I didn’t want to go all “matchy matchy” so this light colored bamboo tray from Household Wonders ( a small family owned business) is perfect. You can use any size or shape tray for your autumn vignette. You can read my product review for this generously sized bamboo tray HERE.
What You Need
Tray from House Wonders
Burlap
Box or books
Twine
Autumn florals, leaves, picks, feathers, pinecones, pumpkins, etc.
Autumn kissing ball (pompadours, topiary balls)
Candles
Scissors
Candle
Focal piece ( my sprite)
Line the tray with a scrap of burlap and then, using books, or a box ( I rescued mine from our paper recycle bin) wrap with burlap and twine. They will be used for height.
You will love this, make sure you have a towel to wipe the sweat from your brow. Let’s create these 20-second topiaries. Using candlesticks, kissing balls, (full disclosure I bought these from a local craft shop) and some scissors. Snip off the string and place the kissing balld on top of candles sticks, fluff and step back as you bask in the glow of your efforts. Now that you have lined your tray and wrapped your box or books in burlap. It’s time to add them to your tray and start adding things to create your vignette. Keep in mind varying heights are always attractive. Tell your autumn story using your vignette. I wanted some moderate height in front of the topiaries so I flipped over a pinecone candlestick for taper candles and placed a pillar candle on top of the bottom (new uses for old things my friends). How often do you get to say ” on top of the bottom, (wink)”.
This candlestick flip method is for decorating only, do not do this if you plan to burn your candle. If you have a flameless candle ( battery operated) then, of course, you can turn it on.
Keep balance in mind when you are creating your vignette, varying heights and use of textures. You will play around with it until it portrays your vignette theme. Mine is a simple autumn sprite. He is my “official” piece of autumn decor ( I’ve had him for years). When he pops up in my decor, it is autumn! I would love to see how your autumn tray turned out ( you do not need to be a blogger) if I receive 4 or more I’ll add them all to this post! click here to contact me).
I may still play around with mine a little bit more before it settles in its rightful place. But in the meantime…ta daa!
Will you put on your crafty hat and create an autumn tray vignette?
I hope to see you all back here on Thursday for the best blog link party in blog land!
