DIY That Almost Wasn’t

I can only speak for myself, but nearly every DIY involving furniture has come with an unexpected challenge. I had this accent chair in the guest room and our sweet Izzy liked to curl up on it too. One afternoon I noticed it had sunken in on one side. I went to the fabric store the next day and found the perfect foam padding to fix the chair and then….

One whole year later, Yes you read that right, one year has passed. I decided to drag it out and “stuff in” some foam. I gathered together all of the standard tools for the project and flipped it over. It has a velcro lining underneath that I never realized was there. How many of you look up underneath your chairs? Any hands? No, okay then, I’m not alone. I guess, “under chair looking “is not a thing.

After I pulled back the velcro, a gentle pull tore the fabric even more than it already was. Surprise, easy DIY just went …. and the breath in me released like air from a balloon. Springs were poking through the bottom lining.

I was able to push the foam in evenly and return the springs to a forward position and I covered what I could with what was left of the fabric.

But, then I was faced with those ugly springs. I tried pulling, turning, tugging and twisting and then pulling some more. But, I had to face the fact I just wasn’t strong enough. So I called in the big guns. That’s right, hubby gave it a bit of a redesign and fashioned a metal piece to hold the springs in. He said it was an “embarrassing solution”, I said it was clever and it worked, so no complaints here ( wink).

I added a few more staples for a little extra “umph “. It’s not pretty under there. So, I also added some muslin to this DIY that almost wasn’t and stapled it down. I had to ask Izzy to move his bone, giggle, before I repositioned the ugly black fabric to cover it. I reattached the velcro pieces that had pulled away with some hot glue and…

Izzy seems perfectly comfy. So it’s time to say, Ta Daa!

Now the chair will go back into the guest room, and that is another to do that has been “to done! “
