3 Tips for Growing Peonies
Hello friends, the US is in turmoil, the world is in turmoil, the virus, the protesting, the senseless violence, vandalism, and looting….. today I say, “step away “from the chaos and find respite here at Katherines Corner. You are all welcome to my happy place, it is a shelter from the storm, and it is time to visit the peonies in our garden.
The peonies in our garden also need shelter from the storm. Spring storms here in Utah can be brutal and cause havoc on these beautiful top-heavy flowers. But you can give them some protection, by using bamboo stakes to hold them up. If you add the stakes (or you can even use wood tomato cages) before they bloom they will hold up well to spring storms.
Peonies grow best when planted deep in slightly moist, well-drained, fertile soil.
The gorgeous peonies only bloom for a short period (about 7-10 days). The anticipation of their beautiful blooms starts for me in mid-April, the peonies start blooming in May.
Peonies need a minimum of 5 hours of full sun, and like many perennials, you may need to wait up to 3 seasons for them to bloom prolifically. But, as you can see, they are well worth the wait.
3 Tips for Growing Peonies
- Grow in rich well-draining soil
- Provide shelter from strong winds with stakes
- Full sun for a minimum of 5 hours a day
I have shared our peonies with you before, you can see the fuchsia ones HERE and another peony post here

Our peonies were really crushed this year by a rain storm. We’ve only been at this house a couple of years, and I really didn’t know how to take care of them. I love them so much. Next year I’m going to give them more support! Lovely post. xox
We all need support, wink. Your peonies will thank you. Hoping yours stay safe and in full bloom next year xo
I have three bushes of peonies. Yes, they are top heavy. I will try staking them to protect the gorgeous blooms! Thank you for the tip.
Donna it’s my pleasure to share with you. Hugs
I do have one bundle of peonies in my garden and they are on the verge of blooming.
How wonderful. Do you stake yours? I’d love to see a photo. Hugs!
