Raised Bed Gardening
Hello friends. My husband and I have been discussing the veggie garden. He’ll make changes to adjust to my “new normal”. I love my veggies (we both do). But most raw veggies and fruit are no longer allowed. Oh, how I miss salads. If you’ve been here for a while you know I already have a lot of diet restrictions. But this post isn’t about that. I will do my best to avoid mentioning illness. I will mention it only if it affects my sharing with you. Let’s focus on the veggie garden. Because my friends, spring has sprung!
Whether you have a little or a lot of space I advocate for raised bed and container gardening. We are fortunate, my hubby has a large garden; he’s already planted potatoes. (smile) My hubby has a green thumb, finger and probably toe too (giggle). I smile big when I see people asking him about gardening. His face lights up as he shares his gardening tips and experiences.

We do some container gardening, mostly flowers and herbs. Peppermint and basil both do well in a container. They both smell amazing. We put them in decorative containers on either side of the patio steps. We were hoping to raise our garden beds this year but it’ll have to be put off for now. We do have a box garden which is above the ground. But we planned to go up about 3-4 feet, that’ll have to wait for now. That’s okay we are patient.
Some of the advantages of raised bed gardening are not just less strain on your back. They offer a practical, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing way to grow plants, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner.

Here’s a list of reasons why raised bed gardening can be right for you.
- Improved Soil Quality-One of the most significant advantages of raised bed gardening is the ability to control your soil composition. You can create a variety of beds. Use different types of nutrient rich soil specific to the particular plants you are growing.
- Better Drainage-Raised beds naturally promote excellent drainage. Which can reduce or remove the risk of root rot or over watering.
- Accessibility-Elevated gardening reduces the need for bending, stooping, or kneeling. Which can of course make the joy of gardening a lot less stressful on you physically.
- Better Pest Control-Raised beds act as a deterrent to some common garden pests. For instance, barriers can be added to block burrowing animals like moles or rabbits. Additionally, the defined borders make it easier to spot and handle pest issues before they become widespread.
- Space-If you’re short on space, raised beds maximize planting density, allowing you to grow more in a smaller space.
- Extended Growing Season-The soil in raised beds warms up faster in spring compared to in-ground gardens. This means you can plant earlier and extend your growing season.
- Weed Management-Raised beds make it easier to keep weeds at bay. By elevating the garden space you drastically reduce the number of weeds that can creep in.
- Aesthetic Appeal-Beyond functionality, raised beds add a polished look to any outdoor space. These beds are available in various materials, such as wood, metal, and stone. They can be customized to match your style. This creates a garden that’s not only productive but also visually appealing.
