Dining Table Makeover-
The dining table is where meals are shared, work is done, notes and cards are written and people are gathered for happy memory making. The centerpiece of the dining area. Don’t you just love a makeover ♥. Before and after inspirations often make me take another look at my pending to do list. I have a few makeovers on my list, giggle. The dining room table is a must have and making it perfect is on the agenda today courtesy of my lovely bloggy friend Heather, from Woods of Bell Trees . At her blog she shares her talents for writing, DIYs, decor, crafts and organizing projects . You can always find something wonderful happening at her sweet blog. Today it is my pleasure to have her sharing her talents here at Katherines Corner.

I’ve had a dining table dilemma for years; I love round tables and they’re also the best fit in my house, but they’re not the best fit for my life. I need a large surface area, it needed to extend, it had to be solid wood and I really wanted a trestle table. Trestle tables were out of the budget that I had set for myself, I thought of making one but I know I don’t have time for that. When I found the Norden table at Ikea I knew that it was the one for me: at $299 the price was right, with solid wood and an extendable table top it offered what I needed without being overwhelmingly large. For the last 6 months it has been loved and used in our kitchen, but it wasn’t quite right…it wasn’t speaking to me.
I sat at the table and I stared at it, I stared until it spoke and what it said was “paint me”. It was begging for a coat of paint. I was ready with my trusty chalk paint, I thought the better of it and pulled out the Miss Mustard Seed milk paint. My first coat was a translucent coat of Trophy, going over it with a second coat of Ironstone. I brushed the first coat of Ironstone roughly so that it pulled some of the Trophy off, to reveal a bit of the wood underneath.
The third and final coat was Ironstone brushed on more gently. I waited one hour or so between coats of paint. Because this is a table I didn’t want to use wax, so i went with Rustoleum’s wipe on polyurethane in gloss. I gave the tabletop 3 coats of poly and the rest of the table a single coat. I used a rag for the poly giving it a very nice even finish. For the paints I used regular paint brushes that I picked up at the Dollar Tree…and yes they are as good as any. I did not do any additional distressing, I let the second coat of paint be the main subject of character.
I opted out of using any Bonding Agent, I just wanted to see what would happen. I was pleasantly surprised that very little paint chipped as it dried.
With milk paint one must be willing to just “go with it”; the results are unique to each piece which I think gives a look done with milk paint more love and a higher quality of character. I have lightly hit on the life benefits that milk paint has had for me when I painted my bathroom vanity a couple of months back; milk paint has continued to change the way I see life and has allowed me to take a more relaxed approach to whatever I am facing. Even something as insignificant as paint can enhance the finer points of your life. So darlings, whip yourself up a batch of milk paint and let it transform not only your furniture, but you too!
The table still does not speak to me, instead it sings. It’s ready for lots of family dinners and games of Memory! We’re all happy with our “new” table even hubby, who normally doesn’t have opinion on such matters!

What a lovely job, I hopped over from “I should be Mopping the Floor” link party. I recently did a very similar finish in chalk paint on my office desk. It was a dark reddish wood and I gave the legs and skirt a French feel with Paris grey and a graphite wash. The top I did three very thin washes and then clear wax. I will be posting the project on my blog next week.
