Seagulls and Roses
On a recent trip to the market, on a not so special day, I watched a flock of seagulls descend from the sky in unison. They were diving to the hot road to snag fries left behind, no doubt, by a now screaming hungry child. Seagulls are the state bird and we have gazillions of them, I rarely give them much notice. I usually think of a flock of seagulls, not to be confused with Flock of Seagulls (the band) as being a bit of a nuisance really. But on this day, I watched them. They dove repeatedly to the treasured potatoes strewn across the parking lot. I watched one that needed to fight to get his fries, he looked pretty worn out already. I didn’t think he had any chance to win the “battle of the fries”. But there was still some fight in him, and he took the fry and flew over to a nearby fence where he proceeded to enjoy his trophy. In full view of all the other hungry seagulls.
As I have mentioned on numerous occasions (good grief I can be repetitive, wink) I love fresh flowers on the dining table. Fresh cut from the garden or a bundle from the market. On this seagull watching trip to the market, I found a shopping cart filled with cast-off flower bouquets (bundles) Wilted and at death’s door, they were all marked down for clearance! I found two bundles, each marked two dollars. Pink carnations (one of my favorites) and a little bundle of wilted buttercream roses. Like the seagulls, I would most commonly pass them by. But, on that day I took them home. I filled the vase with water and the stay fresh powder. A packet of flower food containing sugar, acid, and bleach. Sugar gives nutrients to the flowers, acid maintains the pH level of the water, and bleach reduces the number of bacteria in the water. I always use them, do you? The roses had a big ta daa moment.
The wilted roses like the seagull were looking a bit rough. But, they still had some life in them. The wilted roses looked beautiful sharing the vase with pink carnations for over a week!
Seagulls and Roses, some of us feel like the seagull or the wilted rose on one day or another and I’m here to say, there’s still a lot of fight left in you and me too.
I look forward to seeing you back here for the TFT party on Thursday, enjoy your day everyone!
What a sweet post, just like you! Visiting at TFT, where I shared How to Use Fall Colors to Awaken Your Senses. Warm regards, Nancy Andres @ http://www.colors4health.com
Thanks for the tips on freshening flowers…..they are beautiful !
That’s pretty good they lasted another week.
Whenever I hear seagulls, I only hear – Mine? Mine? Mine? (Of course, you said flock of seagulls, and not that one song is stuck in my head.)
What a nice analogy and the flowers are gorgeous. I always visit what is called The Lazarus section of all of the shops including Lowes. I have found some great deals there. Some of my beautiful roses are from that section. The price is right and it is rewarding to bring them back to life.
Beautiful analogy here with the seagulls and roses. Thanks for sharing and Happy Tuesday now, Katie xoxo <3
