Archie an Angel Story
Hello Friends, Archibald Buster (aka Archie) lead a quite life in his little town. A retired history teacher and coach at the local high school, he was beloved by all. He met the love of his life, Maria in college. They spent their lunch time at a local park feeding the ducks. Some people don’t believe in love at first sight, but Archie and Maria would be quick to correct you. They fell in love the day they met . They were married the following spring in Medford park, where everyone was given bread cubes to feed the ducks.
After he lost Maria to cancer in 2014, he spent all of his days in his workshop. It’s where he made beautiful furniture out of burl wood and where he felt closest to Maria. She would spend hours with him in the workshop, keeping him company, chatting, laughing and embroidering while he worked.
One hot summer Saturday in 2018 Archie was at the hardware store picking up supplies and chatting at the checkout counter with Ben the shop owner, a friend and former student. They were talking about the recent town activities when a woman politely interrupted and asked where she could find mounting wire for her paintings. Ben asked if she was an artist and she nodded yes and glanced at Archie with a shy smile. Ben was quick to tell her about Archie’s artistry making furniture, as he walked away to grab the hanging wire. She asked Archie if she could see his work some time, he agreed. She introduced herself as Helena and wrote her phone number on the back of the hardware business card on the counter. She gave it to Archie and her shy smile turned into a full smile and a bit of a twinkle in her eyes couldn’t be missed. She paid Ben for the wire and left.
Ben was grinning and telling Archie what a nice woman she seemed to be. Encouraging Archie to call her and see what happens. Archie nodded again and muttered maybe.
Several weeks had passed when Archie found the business card among the mail in the bowl on the counter. He looked at it and put it in his shirt pocket. He spent the day working on a small side table in his workshop and he noticed the business card on the floor. He felt his pocket and sure enough it wasn’t there. He picked it up off of the floor and placed by his coffee mug on the work bench. When it was time for lunch he went inside and made a sandwich, grabbed a bottle of orange soda and sat at the table where he and Maria would eat breakfast every morning. He dropped his napkin and reached down to pick it up. When he sat up the business card was on the table. Feeling very confused he looked around to see if anyone was there. He put the business card back into his shirt pocket and asked out load, if Maria was there. The curtain in the kitchen blew up and there was a rattle of glasses in the sink. He went over to close the window and looked down, the business card was by the sink. He couldn’t believe it. He said out loud, “okay my angel I will give her a call.”
Archie and Helena were married the following summer.
