Searching for Meaning in Times of Loss
Hello, sweet friends. I know many of you are watching the news or experiencing firsthand the heartbreaking natural disasters across our world. From fierce storms and floods to devastating fires, so many people have lost their homes, their sense of security, or even a precious loved one. The sheer scale of these tragedies is overwhelming, and my heart aches for everyone affected.
During times like these, it is completely natural for our hearts to search for an explanation. When faced with unspeakable tragedy, we naturally look for a reason why. Because randomness is just too scary to process. That is why we so often hear people say, “It’s an act of God,” or “God is angry,” or “God did this.”
Attributing these events to God is often a reflection of our profound grief. When everything feels out of control, finding someone or something to blame gives our broken hearts a way to try to make sense of a world that suddenly feels terrible loss.
Even in the middle of nature’s harsh storms, I find comfort in Psalm 46
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…”

Merciful Lord,
We come to You today lifting up all those affected by recent disasters. The families grieving loved ones, those who have lost their homes, first responders, those who are trying to help and everyone facing an uncertain tomorrow. Wrap Your arms of comfort around every broken heart.
Where there is fear, bring Your peace. Where there is loss, bring hope. Keep us steady in faith, and remind us that You are always our refuge.

I think one of the traps I’ve started understanding is believing I can always find a reason or a purpose when bad things happen. Sometimes from a distance we may see a reason. Other times we will never understand God’s timing or reasons.
It doesn’t mean I don’t get hurt or angry but I have stopped expecting there to be a detailed explanation.
Many people struggle to achieve the freedom that comes with surrendering the need to make sense of everything. It takes a lot of spiritual and emotional maturity to hold space for pain and anger without demanding an instant “why.” Accepting that we won’t always have a detailed explanation, or that God’s timing isn’t meant to fit neatly into our understanding doesn’t diminish the grief. But as you said, it frees us from the trap of constantly searching for answers that aren’t ours to have. Thank you for leaving such a heartfelt comment. Hugs!
