Decorating With Precious Mementos

We all have several mementos and treasured heirlooms throughout our home’s décor and decorating with precious mementos, heirlooms, photos or souvenirs is probably not on your mind when you add them to your home. As a happy Brand Ambassador for Graham & Brown I am joining 49 other bloggers worldwide who will accept a monthly challenge in the ‘Year in Design 2015’. The Challenge for this month is- “Precious “.”We all have something that is precious, but what if it was to move rooms? How would you redecorate a room from scratch to boast about your treasure?”
I found this challenge particularly difficult as I don’t decorate a room around a precious treasure or memento. Instead, like most of you, I incorporate them in every room. Most of our precious items are photographs. They are displayed throughout our homes adding love and sparking memories. With that in mind I thought I would share a few tips about decorating with precious mementos. If you missed my previous Graham & Brown post you can find it HERE  

On my dresser I keep a photo of my sweet husband at one of our favorite places on the Oregon coast. The little blue birds were purchased when my Mother came to visit.
On my nightstand I keep this wonderful wood bowl, a gift from my hubby. It originally came filled with flowers. Can you see that little pink stone heart inside? It was a gift from a medium and shop owner in Park City. You may recognize the “Inspired You” book by fellow blogger Miss Mustard Seed, Marian Parsons. Hanging on my bedpost is my Fathers crucifix, he never took it off. After he passed on my Mother gave it to me. It hangs on the post with his white bedside cross. I have it suspended from a necklace my sister sent to me right after we met for the first time. You can read about it here.

That’s not dirt on the vase it’s rubbed to look vintage 🙂 Just in case you thought otherwise, LOL

• Souvenirs-
  Creating a shadow box for your souvenirs is a lovely way to display precious mementos in your home décor. Our Oregon coast shadow box hangs above my husband’s armoire. Just below it, on top of his armoire, he keeps one of his favorite photos of me and his carved polished Picasso Marble Buffalo ( a souvenir from another adventure). To keep “slightly” to the challenge I moved his rabbit, a precious heirloom, from the kitchen to the bedroom. This wood rabbit was carved from a single piece of wood by his Grandfather. Sadly my hubby has very few mementos from his youth. His Mother’s home was destroyed by a fire many years ago taking with it many precious photos and mementos. I really like having a  live plant on his armoire . Do you have plants in your bedroom?

• Themes-
  Most interior designers agree that you should avoid themes. If you have precious mementos from a trip to the islands, there is no need to paint your walls and add palm trees. Or recreate your trip in a room dedicated to the islands. Moderation is the key and instead of scattering all of the seashells you found on the beach through every room. Try filling a pretty bowl with them or select one or two and add them to your home décor.

• Children’s Artwork-
  Take those precious mementos made by your children, grandchildren, etc. off of the fridge and select one or two and put them in a frame or shadow box. Keep the rest in a scrapbook so they can still be enjoyed. The June issue of Good Housekeeping had an article about room makeovers and I thought the high impact wallpaper was a fun idea for home décor. I noticed that interior designer Sarah Richardson added some vintage plates to this design. Use metallic paint to stamp a child’s hand print on the plate. I just love this idea and what could be more precious than a child’s hand print.

 

I think Graham & Brown Floral Stripe Cream Shimmer wallpaper would be lovely on a feature wall like this displaying your children’s hand prints.

I think I may have failed this challenge, I just can’t imagine our bedroom emptied of its precious mementos. But, I did move the rabbit to the bedroom from the kitchen and my hubby smiled when he saw it on his armoire, I hope that counts.
