Unexpected Home Decor

Have you ever walked into someone’s home and thought, “I never expected to see that in her home?” Maybe it was a fun surprise hidden among her ironstone dishes, a whimsical treasure perched on a shelf or a dish filled with beer bottle caps in a home filled with French accents.   I always find it a wonderful surprise to find unexpected items in someone’s home it shares even more of their personality. As a Brand Ambassador for Graham & Brown I am joining 49 other bloggers worldwide who will accept a monthly challenge in the ‘Year in Design 2015’. The Challenge for this month is- “Eureka “. How do you create that Eureka moment in your home?

The word Eureka, ” is used to express delight on finding, discovering,  solving something” .   I recently had someone visit who said , “that was an unexpected surprise”.  It was truly serendipitous that this challenge fit so well with that statement. She was referring to the koi fish in our atrium.

 

Our home decor is a mix of modern and traditional styles, with some mission style pieces thrown in too.  I do believe you will find some pieces around our home that may have you saying, “that is an unexpected bit of home decor”. I hope this post brings a smile and encourages you to create Eureka moments in your home decor too.

I imagine you would expect to see a guitar in the corner ( not really home decor, I know).

But would you expect to see this Atlas Ruan on the wall?

It is a Chinese string instrument that my husband brought back from his business trip to China.

You would expect to see this very traditional style painting  and Tiffany floor lamp, I think our philodendron needs a little taming.

On the other end of the upstairs hall you will find this amazing piece of art that I call, “women in profile”. It was a very generous gift received from my employer many years ago. Did you expect to see this in our home?
