Ranunculus

Ranunculus-

What is all the hub bub about Ranunculus this year? I have seen so many articles and photos lately all about the Ranunculus flower. Over the winter hubby and I discussed planting them in the front garden this year. It looks like our plan has been part of this spring’s garden trend, who knew!

Ranunculus for a bridal bouquet
Ranunculus is a lovely bride’s bouquet flower. I used pink ones for my recent Keepsakes by Katherine banner. There are 600 species of Ranunculus! Every color you can imagine and the paper thin petals make a beautiful bouquet. You will need several to fill a bride’s bouquet so keep in mind that Ranunculi (plural for Ranunculus) can be a bit expensive. My research found prices everywhere from $100 for a dozen cut and $350 for a bouquet. The most popular colors are yellow, white, pink, red and orange. I  am most fond of the white and pink Ranunculi. Grow them in your garden, or in a container, it is a lot cheaper. Each bulb (tuber) is about $2 each. Our local garden center has a package of 6 for $9 , you may be able to find a better price where you are.

how to grow ranunculus

They bloom in the spring and summer months in our zone (4-6). Its important to know the hardiness zones in your area so your plants will grow as expected. Do you know your hardiness zone? The National Gardening website can help you, click HERE for more information on gardening and hardiness zones.

container growing ranunculus
Planting them is fairly easy; the tuber is unique and slightly creepy looking. I always enjoy container gardening and I invite you to learn “How to plant Ranunculus from Jeff Turner’s guide to planting Ranunculus corms in pots”. He is a lovely gentleman, soft spoken and very knowledgeable. I think of him as the Mr. Rogers of gardening. You’ll understand why when you watch his video click here .

Are you growing Ranunculus ? I love the name too, if you say it a few times really fast it is sure to provide a giggle. Ranunculi  is a giggle too. Go on give it a try.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Take a few minutes to add your name to the You Design It Contest.

Wow, those flowers are beautiful Katherine! I was thinking “rudbeckia” when you said “ranunculus,” so I was immediately visualizing black-eyed susans and red cone flowers, so imagine my surprise when I saw what they really were! They look a little like roses, so I can well imagine they are that expensive!

Lovely! We just moved last fall and our yard needs a lot of work. It’s small so I’ll check out the video on planting them in pots. Thanks so much! Happy gardening!

I planted them last fall for the first time. I fell in love with them several years ago and had them in my bridal bouquet. I love growing them in my garden… I plan to plant a bunch more this fall!
