3 Simple Tips I use in a Small Laundry Room

In the laundry room a seemingly never ending pile of laundry awaits with varying degrees of stains and pocket treasures, gum, coins, etc.I’m happy to share my 3 simple tips I use in a small laundry room. No matter where your laundry room is I venture a guess that it gets a lot of use. Over the years I’ve had laundry rooms in a dark corner in the basement, in the garage and in a small space behind bi-fold closet doors (I also had my years of public laundromats too, eeek.) But, when we built our house nearly 11 years ago we made sure that the laundry room is on the same floor as the bedrooms. This is a luxury and I know it. I will miss it when we have to downsize to our retirement home. Well, you never know, maybe everything will be on the same floor. No matter what or where you make clean out of dirty it is a very busy area in everyone’s home. I have 3 simple tips I use in a small laundry room that make doing the laundry a little bit nicer for me and I’m sharing them with you. When our washing machine had to be replaced a couple of years ago we considered the front loading washers and dryers and that a counter built above them would be great. But, our budget couldn’t accommodate the expense, do you know how much they cost! I do fold and put clean laundry on top of the dryer, it works fine. We have a GE Washer and Dryer; we purchased them from Lowe’s (home improvement store). I think we have purchased nearly all of our large home appliances from Lowe’s. They have great customer service and they meet and beat prices from other stores. No I am not advertising for Lowes or GE, just sharing my experience with you. On a side note, the sun was playing hide and go seek when I took these photos.

Tip 1-Where do lost socks go? If you have the answer I’m ” all ears”don’t mind the bunny pum. I’m also interested in learning about the ” multiply like bunnies” clothes hangers too. I hang the lonesome sock that’s missing a mate on a pretty bulletin board. If you’re looking at hanging socks it’s nice to have something pretty to hang them on. I use it regularly for drying my hands.

Tip 2-Keeping a small laundry room tidy can be difficult, organization is a priority. Small space means staying organized. Hubby and I are both tall (he is 6’4” and I am 5’9”) so we installed cupboards that go all of the way to the ceiling. I use baskets inside my cupboards. They’re easy to get too and hold quite a bit. Whoever buys this lovely home needs to be tall or have a step ladder (wink.) I also have the ironing board hanging on the back of the door and a simple wire shelving unit ( oh I just realized it’s from Lowe’s too) in this small space. Laundry baskets go on top, I keep hangers on the shelf edge, iron and steamer on the bottom shelf and a clean towel is used for drying delicate things. I just spread it out on top of the dryer and place the garment on the towel. I also use the curtain rod for drying delicate’s instead of for curtains, I put whatever needs to dry on a hanger and hang it on the curtain rod. Its usually spun dry so it’s not dripping wet.

Tip 3- I spend a lot of time in the laundry room, even more this week because we have our grandchildren staying with us.  Seeing something pretty can make the laundry task a little bit nicer, add a bit of décor . I have things  I enjoy looking at. My lilacs painting on the right wall as you enter ( you can’t see it very well in the photo) and the pretty lost sock bulletin board mentioned above and this sweet sign our grandchildren gave me a few years ago.
