While I was at the market recently hubby and Izzy passed the time by taking a walk on, what turned out to b, a lovely autumn bluebird day. When I returned to our truck from a ridiculously long visit to our local market (where I always seem to get behind someone who requires management approval) hubby took the cart and gave me a little bag in exchange. Hubby said, “Look what Izzy found for you, acorns!” I replied with gleeful squeal followed by, “acorn craftiness!” First I must acknowledge that hubby even thought to help Izzy collect acorns is fantastic! How awesome are they? These acorns are from a scrub oak tree. They have an elongated nut/seed and a bumpy cap.
Before you can use acorns in your crafts or home décor they require some preparation. Start by filling a bowl, basin or sink with hot soapy water. Sorry no photo, it was blurry. Please imagine the acorns in the soapy sink ( wink). Add the acorns and give the water a bit of a swirl with your hand or a wooden spoon. You may see some caps are unattached, no worries (glue gun moment). Swish your soapy water around and this will help to clean the dirt and little buggy residents from your acorns. Rinse with warm water and repeat this process with another basin filled with hot soapy water, rinse again. Line a baking sheet with a paper towel (or kitchen towel) and place the acorns on the paper towel to dry. Let the acorns dry for about 24 hours. Preheat your oven to 175°. Remove the paper towel or kitchen towel and keep the acorns on the baking sheet (I have an old baking sheet I use for crafting so I lined mine with foil). “Bake” for two hours. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely. Then it’s time for acorn craftiness!
I grabbed gold paint for mine. Then I plan to make some little fabric acorns. Of course I will share with you. I found some fun acorn craftiness ideas I think you will enjoy. I’m using some of my acorns in my autumn photos.

My son and I collect acorns each year and feed them to the squirrels off our porch!! I think next year we will have to take the tops off and try that garland though!! Its so pretty!

I made fabric acorns a few years back and I still love them – worth the effort! I’m so glad to see other people still cross stitch. I know it is sort of an “old fashioned” craft, but I find it relaxing and affordable:)

Oh, MY! I adore acorns. I used to go outside during lunch hour and pick them in front of my building. And then, I went nuts one year making felted acorns. I’ve got dozens of them and still have more felt to use up. I’ve attached them to branches for indoor decor. I’d post a pic, but I don’t think I can here. I don’t even mind the squirrels burying them in my yard. It’s all part of the cycle of life.
Love all of the acorn ideas. I have used picked acorns before but don’t think I ever cleaned and baked them. Great tip.

Hi Kathryn, I love finding acorns and crafting with them. The first time I found some I set them on the counter and the next morning there was larva crawling around. Gross! So baking them is a very good idea! Have a lovely autumn day.
