Mothers Day Tablescape

Mother’s Day is tomorrow, and I would like to share with you how I celebrate my mom and the mothers in my life. Mother’s Day is about showing our mothers gratitude and pampering them the best we can. I dreamed up this pretty and sunny table of violets to have a leisurely Sunday brunch with mom and loved ones.

If the weather permits, what could be more beautiful than taking a luncheon and tea party to the heart of a lush garden while enjoying cake and sipping tea, surrounded by all the colors of Mother Nature. I chose a shady spot in a serene garden under a white pergola overlooking a romantic bridge and Japanese pine trees as a lovely backdrop for a light lunch and tea in honor of mom.

My favorite part of planning any event is setting the table. I collect all sorts of tableware so that I can set a pretty table for various events and themes. A beautifully set table makes any meal into a special event, and this year I decided on using my vintage china with a violet flower pattern; and since the diminutive violet flower symbolizes abundance and unconditional love, what could be a more suitable symbol to represent a mother’s, unfailing love? (ultraviolet also happens to be the Pantone color of the year).

I elected vintage green goblets to pick up on the vivid greens of the leaves in the china pattern, and a hand-painted vintage cake plate with violets on it; how perfect!

I went with a white tablecloth to let the plates and flowers be the stars and layered it with a square overlay in the center of the table, hand-embroidered by my mother when she was a young girl that she had gifted to me years ago. And much to my delight, I noticed small violet flowers on it her young hand-stitched so many years ago.

From the moment I chose my violet china pattern, I knew I would use small violet plants along the center of the table, instead of a large floral centerpiece. I put the small pots in teacups keeping the floral arrangement low for easy conversation flow, and they are so whimsical. Mom and guests get to take the little violets in teacups home with them. I also added small purple tea packets as favors from my sweet friend Patrice’s @regalteas boutique which she lovingly provided for this event.
