4 Savory Starters
Hello friends, as September nears its end the air is crisp, and the scent of pumpkin spice is, well…. everywhere! That means autumn holidays are just around the corner. If your house is anything like mine, the kitchen becomes the gathering area before the main meal is served. It’s where stories are shared, laughter is plentiful, and the irresistible aroma of holiday cooking fills the air. It is truly one of my happy places. (smile)
But what do you offer those hungry gatherers while you’re still stirring, roasting, and whisking away? Fear not, I’ve gathered some easy appetizers (starters/ hors d’oeuvre / amuse-bouche) ideas that will keep your guests happily nibbling and mingling, while allowing you to participate and shine in your culinary bliss.

Here are a few pre-dinner, minimal fuss, maximum satisfaction ideas.

Cheese Board: Offer a mix of textures and flavors. Include a creamy brie and a sharp aged cheddar. Add gouda and some tangy goat cheese. Don’t forget your favorite cheese ball. Add a variety of club, butter, and artisanal crackers, crusty baguette slices and mixed nuts. I like to add a spreadable or “dribbler” topper too. Consider adding a fruit jam like fig jam or strawberry, caramelized onion jam, or a pot of honey. Don’t forget some fresh grapes or apple slices too, they are great for refreshing the palate between bites.
Spiced Nuts: You can buy them ready to serve. Or create some of your own. You can make them ahead of time. In a bowl, combine a variety of nuts like pecans, walnuts, and almonds. Add a bit of olive oil and stir to coat. In a separate bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. I don’t use measurements for this. Pour onto the nuts and stir to coat evenly. Spread them out on a parchment lined baking sheet and roast at 300° until fragrant and toasty (about 10 minutes).
Crudités with a Dip: You can upgrade everyone’s favorite veggie sticks with a variety of homemade dips. Add a creamy whipped feta dip. Include a smokey roasted red pepper hummus. Don’t forget everyone’s favorite ranch dip and French onion dip too. Include colorful bell pepper strips, cucumber slices, carrot sticks, celery sticks, fresh broccoli and cauliflower too.

Olives & Marinated Artichoke Hearts: A variety of olives is a nice starter too. Consider adding Kalamata (you may want to rinse them with water if they are briny). Add marinated artichoke hearts, and pickled beets too. This is one of the simplest starters and requires zero prep beyond opening a few jars!
I hope you will enjoy adding one of these to your next gathering.
Enjoy your weekend!
Yum, perfect meal starters, Katherine. Happy TFT! I hope you’re feeling better. xo
