3 Tips to Cope with Holiday Stress

Let’s keep holiday stress out of your holiday this year with 3 Tips to Cope with Holiday Stress. Please join me in welcoming my special guest, Rebecca.

As we enter the month of November, it’s official that the holiday season is upon us. While this can be exciting, it can come accompanied by a nagging feeling of stress. With the stockings, hot chocolate, and presents, comes an increase in spending, along with a constant need to balance a million things at once. It is very important we fight this feeling and remember the reason for the season. Spend time with your loved ones and embrace the merry holiday. I’ve curated some tips on how to help manage these feelings as the holidays approach!

1- Don’t wait to organize
Your home can become quite messy while preparing it for the coming holidays. Between your wrapping paper, ornaments and Christmas lights, a lot of stuff will be coming out of storage! Taking time now, in the early parts of November, to declutter your belongings and make room for your festive Christmas decorations will save you a big headache later. Use these quieter days to plan where the Christmas tree will go this year, or to even just detangle your outdoor Christmas lights. Straightening your home up now will save you time now as opposed to later when you can’t easily set up your various decorations.

2- Make daily to-do lists
Try to keep your to-do lists small and realistic. If you only focus on a few hours at a time, your tasks won’t be so daunting. You can make a small checklist for present shopping, or even section out the lists for each part of the day. Having a morning, afternoon and nightly guide will help hold you accountable, and give you small wins throughout the day. It’s also extremely important to be realistic with yourself on what you can and can’t finish. If you are constantly giving yourself big assignments, you will likely never finish what you have scheduled. With an incomplete agenda, you will be constantly stressed out. Make it easier on yourself and be practical from the start!

3- Plan your shopping
You will be doing quite a bit of shopping in the coming months. Whether it be food or clothes you will need a plan. Sit with your family and create a realistic budget and go from there! If you have an idea of what you can spend before heading to the store, it will make saying no to certain things that much easier. It’s important to stick to our budget, however. If you need something that is vastly out of your price range, you may have to compromise on other things. Finances can be a huge source of stress throughout the holiday season, so if you have a plan of attack, you will be able to combat that feeling before it even starts!

With all these tips in mind, it’s very important to remember just to breath. It’s OK to take a second for yourself and meditate a little. There is a whirlwind of gift giving, holiday parties, and Christmas activities, so it can be hard to find that quiet time. Purposefully allow yourself time in the morning before work, or at night before bed. Adding this into your routine will ease some of that stress.

Please comment on the tip you found the most helpful – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
