Last-Minute Labor Day Game Ideas

Happy Labor Day weekend, friends! Whether you are in the backyard or at a gathering with friends and family, having a few simple games to play can make the fun even more, well…fun! (smile)
You don’t need to run to the store or spend hours prepping. With a little creativity and a few household items, you can pull together a day of laughs for all ages in minutes. Here are a few last-minute game ideas for both indoors and outdoors.

OUTSIDE
Lawn-Bowling -If you have plastic water bottles or empty drink cans, you have a bowling alley! Fill 6 to 10 bottles with a bit of water or sand to keep them upright on the grass. Grab a kickball, basketball, or soft playground ball, set up a line, and let everyone take turns aiming for a strike.If it’s getting dark you can put a activated glow stick into each bottle as the sun sets for night bowling!
Sponge Relay Challenge– Beat the late summer heat without the hassle of filling a hundred water balloons. Set up two large buckets of water at one end of the yard and two empty buckets at the other. Divide into two teams, give each team a big car-wash sponge, and let them race to transfer water from one bucket to the other. It’s quick, refreshing, and guaranteed to get everyone giggling.
Backyard Scavenger Hunt– Send the kids (and adults!) on a hunt with a simple checklist. You can write it out on an index card. Here are some suggestions. A smooth pebble, a red leaf, something fuzzy, a pinecone, hat, sock, golf ball and a pen. First one to find them all wins. Just like an egg hunt. You can also keep it “hands-free” by having players use their phones to snap photos of each item instead of gathering them.

INSIDE
Pass the Bag Dress-Up Game– Grab a pillowcase, container (you can’t see through) or canvas tote and fill it with a silly mix of accessories. Things like oven mitts, funny hats, aprons, scarves, things you can wear, if you have a pair of big Halloween costume glasses, they are always a fun one to add to the bag. Seat everyone in a circle and pass the bag while playing some upbeat music. When the music stops, whoever is holding the bag reaches into the bag without looking, pulls out an item, and puts it on. By the end, everyone looks ridiculous and it’s guaranteed to make you laugh.
The Balloon Challenge– I always like this one (smile). Never underestimate the joy of a simple balloon! Clear a little floor space in the living room, blow up a balloon, and challenge the group to keep it off the floor without using their hands. For an extra challenge, add a second balloon when everyone gets the hang of it.
Boxed games are fun too! Win Lose or Draw, Jenga and Heads Up are some of my favorites.
