Create a Perfect Picnic

Create a Perfect Picnic

Is it just me, or does it seem as though Memorial Day weekend sneaked up on us? Memorial Day weekend is considered the “unofficial “ start of summer and one of my favorite summer activities is to have a picnic by the water. Preferably somewhere my sweet hubby can fish and Izzy can play on a very, very, long leash (it’s about 35 feet long). I’m not sure how many will be visiting Katherines Corner this weekend. You can still link up to yesterdays blog hop if you do stop by for a visit. For those of you who stop by I hope this post helps you to create a prefect picnic for Memorial Day or any day.

For your picnic I think it is important to stick to the same food safety rules you have in the kitchen. I call them the 4 k’s –

Keep it clean,

Keep it covered,

Keep it cold

and Keep things separate.

If you have any leftovers, we never do, wink. But, if you do, the best rule is-if the ice has melted in the cooler, toss the leftovers out. The temperature hasn’t stayed consistently cold so it is better to be safe than sorry, right. I use zip top bags filled with ice instead of loose ice. When it melts it “usually” stays in the bag instead of filling up the cooler and sloshing all over everything.
Be creative with your picnic menu, unless simple sandwiches are what you prefer. I like sandwiches too. But, one of my favorites is barbecued or fried chicken. I cook it the night before and we eat it cold on the picnic. This may not appeal to some of you, but we do not always find picnic areas where we can cook. The truth is I don’t want to spend time cooking when I could be doing something else. You can find my fried chicken recipe HERE. Another picnic favorite is spaghetti salad HERE and cucumber salad HERE.

One of the main ingredients for a perfect picnic won’t be found on any list , and that includes mine. Even if you have soggy sandwiches or sand in your shorts the perfect picnic is all about the happy memory making and spending time with people that make your heart sing.

Enjoy your long weekend ♥

and I hope the weather allows you to Create a Perfect Picnic.
