Healing the Decorating Hangover

Hello friends, now that the glitter and sparkle of the holidays are tucked away, the house feels a little blank. I think I have a post-holiday “decorating hangover”…ugh! One day your home is a glowing wonderland of tinsel and lights, and the next, it feels, well… not.

The dining room is often where the “emptiness” hits hardest for me. We always try to have fresh carnations on our dining table when the budget allows. (smile). But, faux is fine for now. So, a winter centerpiece felt like the perfect starting point. Keep in mind a centerpiece doesn’t have to stay in the dining room. You can add winter touches anywhere in your home.

I replaced the Santas with seasonal elements. I added greenery, neutral colors, and textures to the table. Using greenery that feels “winter” rather than “Christmas” like eucalyptus. Adding neutral textures like a linen tablecloth or a soft runner, even the wooden dough bowl. Greenery always looks great in a dough bowl, and wood adds an immediate sense of warmth to a room. I think I like it with the birds the best. (smile)

I found three key elements to help ease the transition. Keeping in mind that my goal is to create a warm, cozy atmosphere.

#1 embracing simple pleasures and soft, natural materials.

#2 Since we didn’t get the snowy holidays we hoped for this year, I’m bringing the snow inside through color. White or cream colors, pitchers, vases, candles.

#3 If you’re missing the glow of the tree lights, using pillar candles and lamps will brighten things up. I prefer flameless candles on the table.

I hope you focus on comfort by embracing the quiet beauty of winter. You won’t miss the holiday sparkle quite as much (smile). Do you have a “decorating hangover”?
