New Uses For Old Things 4
New Uses For Old Things is one of my most requested posts. Today I am happy to oblige as I have gathered together all of my latest new uses for old things. I look forward to your comments and hope you will share your new uses for old things with me too. First I am sharing an easy way to fluff a down comforter or down jacket after washing. Most can be washed, please check the washing label to make sure. For a jacket get one clean tennis ball, a knee high stocking and two of your favorite dryer sheets. For a comforter you will need four tennis balls four stocking and 8 dryer sheets.
Start by placing the dryer sheets in a cross pattern with one dryer sheet a third of the way up on the other dryer sheet. Put the tennis ball in the center and roll the dryer sheets around. Set it aside for a moment and place your hand inside the stocking. Pick up the dryer sheet covered tennis ball with your stocking hand and pull the stocking down over your hand ( inside out). The ball will be inside. Tie a knot ( not to tight) and toss your jacket and your new jacket fluffer into the dryer on the heat setting recommended. Your tennis ball and fabric softener sheet will fluff your jacket and you will have a nice smell rather than a jacket that smells like a tennis ball. Keep it in your laundry room and add new dryer sheets as needed.

Those of you who frequent Katherines Corner know that in our home we reuse, recycle and upcycle things. We rarely use paper napkins. But, when we do I have a new uses for old things napkin holder.

I have mentioned the importance of having several cutting boards in the past. One for meat, one for vegetables, etc. Keeping them tucked away but still with easy access, can be a challenge sometimes. My new uses for old things bill holder is the perfect cutting board holder 🙂

I bought a couple of lovely tablecloths from Target a while back. They came beautifully packages and wrapped with a strip of fabric with a button and my new uses for old packaging. Curtain Tie backs

Here in Britain they have toast racks at flea markets; Brits prefer their toast cold or something. Anyhow I use a toast rack on my desk to hold notebooks and scratch paper. A coffee mug hold my pens and pencils; another holds sewing tools and yet another all my crochet hooks. If I didn’t have spare coffee mugs, decorated tin cans are another obvious choice. Toilet paper rolls go around gift wrap rolls or get cut in half and filled with potting soil to start seedlings. I grind up my egg shells to add to our compost (they take much longer to break down than veggie clippings and look like litter to me, so ground up solves that). Chocolate box ‘innards’ and egg cartons have served as jewelry holders. Muffin tins could as well, but I tend to use those to freeze things like tomato sauce (from commercial sized tins) or left over wine, rather than the dinky little ice cube trays. I buy second hand curtains at thrift shops. The outsides can be made into tote bags and given as gifts. The muslin lining I use to sew a ‘muslin’ experiment with a new pattern. All fabric scraps are sorted by colour into shoe boxes and they become patchwork projects. Can’t remember the last time I threw out a shoe box or the last time I bought a plastic box. About mid summer we start saving boxes from all sorts up in the loft; handy for wrapping Christmas gifts that don’t come with their own box. I used to nab the large envelopes that were posted to my workplace, saving them from the trash; cut open and used inside out they were a great size for wrapping many of the parcels I sent home. Plastic boxes that veggies sometimes come in are great for organizing the cosmetics drawer. On a winter walk I rescued a broken umbrellas someone had discarded. I stitched it to the back of a hand towel and had a perfect bath mat for when we go camping in the motor home.
I eat my toast cold too ( I’m from England, giggle) I love all of your new uses for old things, they are all fantastic!! xo

I love the idea about the napkin holders, I’d even consider getting one for a similar purpose, as my one and only is still very much used for napkins. Yes, I only have one of most things, besides clothing teehee.

Great ideas! My latest re-purposing was to re-use the plastic cover that a comforter arrived in. I use it to store linens so that the moths can’t munch!
Jacque great new uses for old things! I use those bags too. I put seasonal pillows in them with a dryer sheet to keep them smelling nice. Until I am ready to use them again. xo
