Earth Day 2024
Dear friends, today is Earth Day! We’re celebrating our beautiful planet. Let’s continue to protect and cherish our home by doing all we can to lessen our footprint. We must all do whatever possible to take care of it. I know this is the day it is celebrated but we all know by now that every day is earth day.
This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics. Plastics extend beyond the environmental issue; plastic items present a serious threat to human health just as frightening as climate change. When plastics break down into “microplastics”, they release toxic chemicals into our food and water sources and it’s also in the air we breathe!
Plastic production now has grown to more than 380 million tons per year. More plastic has been produced in the last ten years than in the entire 20th century, and the industry plans to grow explosively for the indefinite future. *
Did you know that more plastic has been produced in the last ten years than in the entire 20th century!
Over the years I’ve shared a variety of ways that hubby and I try to keep plastic and other items from ending up in our local landfill. Here are other ideas for doing your part to keep our planet healthy, which of course, means keeping us healthy too.
- We use flour sack towels instead of paper towels
- Follow the three “R’s” -Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. to conserve natural resources and landfill space.
- Recycle our paper/cardboard and aluminum. Our city doesn’t participate in recycling (green waste only) so we take our recyclables to a recycle center.
- Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.
- We use fabric shopping bags. And We try to buy less plastic items
- We use energy efficient light bulbs and turn the lights off when we leave a room.
- We plant trees, Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
- We don’t send chemicals into our waterways.
- Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.
- We try to drive less.
Happy Earth Day everyone!
