The 10 Commandments and a Giveaway
Hello friends! When I was young, my mother gave me a precious Ten Commandments charm bracelet. I loved it and wore it every day (I took it off to swim or bathe). That sweet daily reminder developed into a deep connection to those words, and I learned every single commandment by heart.
When you think of the Ten Commandments, what comes to mind? It’s so easy to picture a rigid set of ancient rules meant to restrict our freedom. But when we look closer, we see that these instructions are actually a beautiful blueprint for a joyful, peace-filled life designed by a loving Creator.
Written by God’s own hand on stone tablets and given to Moses on Mount Sinai, these ten timeless principles—found in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21—offer us gentle direction, loving guardrails, and lasting wisdom for our everyday lives.
What Are the Ten Commandments and What Do They Mean?
- You shall have no other gods before me. What it means: Putting God first in our lives through faith, decisions, priorities, and affections.
- You shall not make or worship idols. What it Means: Rejecting all false idols. What it means: Keeping our hearts free from letting work, success, possessions, or status replace God.
- You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. What it means: Honoring God’s name with reverence, intention, and authenticity in how we speak and live.
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. What it means: Embracing rest, reflection, and worship so our souls can recharge.
- Honor your father and your mother. What it means: Showing respect, gratitude, and care to those who raised and guided us.
- You shall not murder. What it means: Valuing every human life and harboring love rather than hatred or malice.
- You shall not commit adultery. What it means: Cultivating trust, faithfulness, and deep commitment in our marriage promises/vows.
- You shall not steal. What it means: Practicing honesty, integrity, and respect for what belongs to others.
- You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. What it means: Speaking truth with kindness and protecting the reputation of those around us.
- You shall not covet. What it means: Finding true contentment in what we have rather than comparing our lives to others.
The Ten Commandments are about drawing us closer to God and showing us how to genuinely love others.
