The Right Words for Grieving
Hello friends, this is not the post I had planned to share today. But you all know life often has different plans. My husband’s brother (my brother in law) passed away suddenly on Sunday. As we grieve his passing, we are reminded that life is fragile. We are only here for a short while. It is normal for people to have a spiritual struggle surrounding the loss. I pray this post resonates with you. I hope you find it to be helpful whenever you are faced with the question….

What to say to someone who is grieving
It is important to express your emotional and practical support when you acknowledge their loss. Here are a few things to say when someone you care about loses a loved one.
- May you find solace in knowing that God is always present, even in the darkest moments.
- Remember that God’s love surrounds you and your family, and He is with you, offering strength and comfort.
- Share a memory, I remember…
- God is still good even in the midst of your pain. You may be angry at Him right now and that’s okay. “We can always take refuge in Him. He will never leave us nor forsake us.” Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5
- You can share comforting scriptures, offer prayers, and express hope in a future reunion with their loved ones. The promise of eternal life.
- “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
- “name” was so loved and my life is better because he/she was in it.
Please avoid saying things like: “time heals all wounds.” “They’re in a better place,” “Everything happens for a reason”, “Be strong” or “God has a new angel”. Because, it can sound hollow and dismissive of their pain. Please remember grief is a process, and everyone goes through the stages differently.
I am so sorry for your family’s loss, Katherine. I pray that the love and faith you share will bring some solace in the days ahead as you grieve, remember and celebrate your loved one and all he meant to each of you.
