Picnic Outside of the Box
Hello friends, whether you are having a backyard barbecue or a picnic by the sea, it’s always fun to think outside of the box when it comes to yummy food to share. We all know and love the standards, barbeque chicken, potato, salad (or macaroni salad) hamburgers and hotdogs. They are all fantastic! But today I want you to picnic outside of the box.

Instead of barbecued burgers and dogs, make and take pre-cut rolls and all you need for hoagie sandwiches, separated into containers. A variety of condiments (think of a sandwich bar, lettuce carrots, cucumbers, olives, pine nuts, etc.) Consider adding something spicy or sweet too. Your guests will enjoy making their own sandwiches and they’ll have them just the way they like them.

Serve plain and flavored popcorn instead of potato chips on the side of the hoagies. Or make and take some potato, and or sweet potato chips.
Replace potato or macaroni salad with pre-cut salad making goodies, so each person can create their own salad. Bring a variety of dressings. Leave the bottled dressings at home. Make and take dressings that are sure to please with three favorites and maybe add a twist. Consider a platter of Prosciutto and melon with a torn basil leaves and mozzarella. Or a simple cucumber salad my recipe is HERE, Spaghetti salad my recipe is HERE or make and take Caprese salad mine is HERE.
Having a watermelon rolling around in the back seat of your car is out of the question. Pre-cut the fruit before you leave home.
Popsicles, you can see mine HERE and ice cream is wonderful for hot summer days. But, they don’t travel well. So, picnic outside of the box with frozen grapes, frozen pitted cherries or premade fruit bowls.
Always have plenty of cold water available for drinking. Leave the canned sodas at home and set up a fizzy drink table. Your guests can create cold drinks using pre-washed berries, mint leaves, and seltzer or fizzy water. Make sure you have plenty of Ice cubes! For the adults, add bottles of chilled white or rose’ wine too.
I realize this moveable feast may not seem “kid friendly”, but children love to make food their way. So, give it a try. The adults will love it and hopefully, the children will too.
Make sure you have something sweet and “kid friendly” for dessert too.
Bake cookies, blondies or hand pies and/or make and take frozen yogurt desserts (the yogurt will thaw) and everyone will be happy.
